the chatter is being stirred by knowledgeable washington journalists saying the obama administration may be ready to include these in a fiscal cliff deal with republicans. whatever negotiations are taking place between the president and speaker john boehner, whatever each side is prepared to give up a a level of security. it's totally possible the white house actually has no intent on messing with medicare or social security benefits. but for the left the chatter is ominous. it's coming from well sourced reporters and we've been down this road before. the pursuit with john boehner in 2011, obama was willing. there's reason to suspect there's something to all this chatter. and the question then becomes why? why would obama who simply by doing nothing these next few weeks could get the tax hike on the wealthy he's been demanding without touching medicare and social security? why would he entertain such drastic changes to the safety net? most likely culprit is the dreaded debt ceiling. here's why. republicans came to these talks with no leverage. the consequences of doing nothing before

i don't think anybody in washington, d.c. really knows what will happen next. there are a bunch of theories. few that we're getting is that possibly the senate could come up with some sort of compromise that could be worked on. maybe teen president's plan goes the house floor, the $400,000 income tax rate plan. maybe we separate all the talk about entitlements and all the talk about the unemployment insurance going forward and those types of things and just work on the tax cuts specifically. but what we do know is that the senate will be back here on thursday the 27th. the house is on recess until possibly then. they could be summoned in on 48 hours notice. they could come up with a compromise. we don't know the pathway forward for that. we assume harry reid and president obama will get involved. how much a role john boehner plays the jury is still out on that. >> thanks, luke. have a good holiday. >> short and sweet for you. i wish i had more answers for you. >> kansas congressman tim huelskamp one of the four republicans stripped of his committee chair explai
